What actually matters here
Outside is where weather rating, night performance and power access decide everything, and where most cameras are mounted too high to be useful.
Weather ratings are the easy part. IP65 survives rain from any direction, IP66 survives powerful jets, and both are fine under an eave. What actually kills outdoor cameras is heat in direct afternoon sun and condensation inside a poorly sealed housing, neither of which is in the rating.
Night is where listings get slippery. Infrared reaches further than a spotlight, but infrared footage is monochrome. Colour at night needs a spotlight or a very large sensor, and the range quoted on the box is almost always the infrared number. If you want colour at 40 feet, look at the aperture and sensor size rather than the headline.
Mount at eight to ten feet, angled down, covering the approach rather than the door. Higher looks tidier and gives you footage of the tops of heads. Keep the lens clear of porch-light glare, which is the most common cause of a camera that works perfectly in daylight and shows a white smear after dark.
