The best security cameras for a front door

The front door is the one place where framing matters more than specification.

What actually matters here

A doorbell mounted at the standard height frames a person from roughly the chest up if they are close, and from the waist up if they step back. Neither gives you a face reliably, and neither shows you the parcel on the step. This is a geometry problem and no amount of resolution fixes it.

Two things fix it. A wedge bracket costing a few dollars angles the camera down and solves most of it. A sensor with a tall aspect ratio solves the rest: the REOLINK doorbell here uses a square 1:1 frame specifically so a whole person and the ground in front of them fit in the same image.

The other front door decision is doorbell versus wall camera. A doorbell gives you two-way audio with whoever is at the door and a chime inside. A small wall camera above the door gives you a better angle and costs a quarter as much. Plenty of houses are better served by both, and the cheapest competent wall camera here is under $25.

If the door sits back in a deep porch, check the field of view against the geometry before buying. 166 degrees sounds enormous and still misses someone standing hard against the side wall of a recess.
