Best home security cameras 2026
The best home security cameras of 2026, ranked by what they cost to keep running
A camera costs its price plus whatever it charges every month for the next
five years, and the second number is usually the bigger one. Here are 24 cameras ranked with that
arithmetic done, and the four most people should start with.

Four of the 24 picks, one for each of the most common needs. Tap a name for the full write-up.
If you only buy one camera
Buy the Tapo C320WS if you can get a cable to the spot. It
is wired, so it records continuously rather than waking up on motion, it takes a microSD card so the
footage is yours, and TP-Link's cloud plan is optional rather than load-bearing.
If there is no power where the camera needs to go, the eufy SoloCam
S340 runs on its own solar panel and stores on a base station indoors, so nothing on the wall
depends on a plan. For a corner of the house where you would otherwise need two cameras, the
REOLINK Argus 4 Pro stitches two lenses into one 180 degree view.
If you want a record of everything rather than a record of events, stop looking at individual cameras
and read the CCTV system entry.
What separates the cameras on this page is rarely image quality. It is whether the footage
belongs to you, and whether the camera still does its job in year three if you never pay anyone.
Renting?
Nothing drilled, nothing wired. Battery cameras on
adhesive or clamp mounts, and a doorbell that hangs on the existing bracket.
Apartment picks.
Want it all recorded?
That means a recorder with a hard drive and
cable to each camera. CCTV systems.
Refuse to pay monthly?
Twenty of the 24 record with no plan; the
other four are marked. The no-fee list.
Just the front door?
A doorbell does a job no wall camera does,
and the subscription trap is worst here. Doorbells.
No power outside?
Solar is the fix, and it works better than
people expect once the panel faces the right way. Solar picks.
Shopping on price?
Under $50 now buys a genuinely capable camera.
Indoor picks start there.
The fee question, before anything else
The reason this site ranks on five-year cost rather than sticker price.
A $35 camera on a $5 monthly plan costs $335 over five years. A $90 camera with a
microSD card in it costs $90 and the card. The cheaper camera is the expensive one, and nothing on
the box tells you that.
This matters more in this category than in most, because the thing a plan withholds is usually
the thing you bought the camera for. Live view is nearly always free. Recorded history, person
detection and the ability to go back and find the clip are what sit behind the paywall. A camera
that cannot show you what happened at 2am is an expensive motion sensor.
There are three honest ways out. Buy cameras that record to a card. Buy a kit with a base station
that stores locally. Or buy a recorder and cable, which is the traditional CCTV answer and still the
only one that captures everything continuously. All three appear in the picks below.
All 24 picks, ranked
Ranked on value over five years of ownership, not on sticker price. Each card says whether the camera needs a plan, and what to buy instead if it is wrong for you.

- Buy it if
- You want a wired outdoor camera that records to its own card and never asks for a card number.
- Look elsewhere if
- You cannot get mains power to the spot. This one needs a cable.
This is the camera most people on a budget should buy for outside, and the reason is boring: it is wired, so it records continuously, and it takes a microSD card, so the footage is yours. The listing claims 2K at 4MP with an IP66 enclosure.
The night vision story is better than the price suggests. The listing describes dual spotlights for color night footage plus an 850 nm infrared sensor for mono, and a starlight sensor for low light. That is three separate night modes on a camera at this price, and the 850 nm emitters are the visible kind, which some people read as a deterrent and others find annoying on a bedroom wall.
What you give up is placement freedom. It needs a cable, and TP-Link does sell a cloud plan you can ignore. Check the mounting bracket against your eave before you buy; the body is longer than the photos suggest.

- Buy it if
- You want to put a real camera somewhere without thinking hard about it.
- Look elsewhere if
- You want person detection and cloud history without paying; Wyze gates some of that behind Cam Plus.
At this price the honest question is not whether it is the best camera but whether it is a real one, and it is. The listing specifies 2560x1440 across a 120 degree view, IP65, and an operating range from -4F to 113F.
The spotlight is 72 lumens, which is enough to put color into a porch at night but not enough to light a driveway. There is a 100 dB siren in the body. Wyze has had security incidents in its past that are worth reading about before you put one indoors, and they are well documented in the press rather than something this site tested.
Treat the subscription as optional and the camera as the product. If you want person detection and event history you will end up paying monthly, and at that point run the numbers against a camera that includes it.

A dual-camera head that pans a full circle when you mount it vertically, with the HomeBase S380 in the box doing the storage. eufy's position on local storage is the reason this appears here.
The listing claims 3K with 8x zoom and clear detail to about 40 feet, and a seven-minute install. Solar keeps it running without a cable.
Two cautions. The rating rests on a small number of ratings, so it is early. And eufy had a well-publicised episode in 2023 about cloud behaviour that did not match its marketing; it is worth ten minutes of reading before you commit a camera to an interior room.

Four solar cameras and a base station that stores the footage locally, with the listing stating 32 GB of built-in storage and up to four months of retention. That retention figure assumes event recording, not continuous, which is the thing to understand before you compare it with a wired system.
aosu says three hours of daily sun keeps them charged. Each camera pans and tilts and will follow motion automatically, and the app can show four streams at once. For a house where running cable is out of the question, this is the least painful way to get real coverage.
Battery cameras miss things. They wake on motion, and the first fraction of a second is already gone by the time recording starts. If what you actually need is a record of everything that happened, you want the wired system further down this page instead.

- Buy it if
- You want everything recorded, all the time, with no gaps and no monthly fee.
- Look elsewhere if
- You rent, or you are not willing to run cable through walls.
This is what people mean when they search for CCTV rather than for a security camera. A recorder with a hard drive in it, cameras on network cable, and footage that exists whether or not anything triggered a sensor.
The listing specifies 4K at 8MP per camera, a pre-installed 2 TB drive, expansion to 8 TB, and PoE runs up to 330 feet, which means one cable per camera carrying both power and video. Person and vehicle detection runs on the recorder to cut down the alerts that animals and shadows would otherwise generate.
The install is the cost. Four cable runs through an attic is a weekend if you are comfortable and a contractor if you are not. Budget for that honestly, because it is frequently more than the difference between this and a battery kit.

- You are deep in the Ring or Nest app already and want one app for everything.
Doorbells are where subscriptions bite hardest, because the thing you want from a doorbell is the recording and that is exactly what the free tier usually withholds. This one ships with a base station holding 8 GB and a stated 60-day loop.
The detection stack is unusual at this price: the listing describes radar plus PIR infrared plus AI person recognition working together, which is aimed squarely at the false alerts that make people turn notifications off. 5MP across 166 degrees is more sensor than most doorbells carry.
It runs on battery or hardwired. Hardwire it if you have the transformer, because a doorbell that dies in February is a doorbell you will stop trusting.

The listing is explicit that real-time alerts, two-way audio, person detection and playback all work without a plan, which is the whole reason to look at it.
940 nm infrared is the invisible kind, so there is no red glow on the porch at night. The f/2.5 aperture and 2K sensor are modest, and the field of view is 166 degrees.
2.4 GHz only is stated plainly in the listing and is the single most common reason these come back. Check that your router still broadcasts 2.4 GHz and that the band is not hidden behind a combined SSID that confuses setup.

Best wire-free camera for a wide view

- Fee needed
- No
- Buy it if
- You need one camera to cover a corner of the house where two would normally go.
- Look elsewhere if
- You want a long settled review record. This listing's rating is the weakest of our picks.
Two lenses stitched into a single 180 degree frame is the whole pitch, and it is a genuinely useful one on a corner where a single 110 degree camera leaves a blind spot you only discover after something happens in it.
REOLINK specifies an f/1.0 aperture over a 1/1.8-inch sensor for the ColorX night mode, which is a large sensor for a battery camera and is why it can hold color without a spotlight. Solar keeps it topped up, and the listing says it works wire-free.
The caution is the rating. This listing sits at 3.8 stars, the lowest of anything we rank, and it shares that score with two sibling listings, so the number covers several configurations rather than this one. Stitching artefacts at the seam are the complaint to look for in recent reviews before you commit.

- Buy it if
- You want the driveway lit and recorded, continuously, from one fixture.
- Look elsewhere if
- There is no wiring at the spot. This replaces a mains light fitting.
A floodlight camera does two jobs, and the light is the half people underrate. 2600 lumens across 270 degrees reaching about 33 feet is a real exterior light, not a courtesy lamp bolted to a lens.
Three PIR sensors cover 270 degrees, so it picks up movement arriving from the side rather than only head-on, and the listing says the lens turns toward what triggered. Being hardwired, it records continuously instead of waking on motion.
It goes where a light already is. If you have a working exterior fitting with a switch you can leave permanently on, this is a straight swap; if you do not, add an electrician to the price.

180 days is the headline, and like every battery claim it assumes light use. The number that matters is how often it triggers, which is why the activity zones in this listing are the feature to set up on day one rather than an extra.
It takes a microSD card up to 512 GB, so the footage can stay on the camera. Tapo Care exists as a cloud option and is not required for the camera to do its job.
1080p across an outdoor scene is enough to tell you a person was there and usually not enough to tell you which person. Put this where you need to know that something happened, and put a 2K camera where you need to know who.

Two cameras for about $25 is the kind of price that usually signals a compromise somewhere, and the review count argues otherwise: this listing has more ratings than anything else on this site by an order of magnitude.
The pan and tilt range is a full circle horizontally and 114 degrees vertically, which means one camera covers a room rather than a corner of it. The listing calls out baby-cry detection alongside person and motion, and states plainly that using it as a baby monitor costs nothing extra.
Indoors, pointing is the whole skill. A camera that can turn is a camera someone else could turn, so set a privacy position and use the app's schedule if the room is in use. Treat the remote pan as the feature it is rather than assuming it is always harmless.

The magnetic base is the part that makes this more useful than its price suggests. It sticks to anything ferrous, which means a railing, a garage shelf or a downpipe bracket without drilling anything.
IP66 means it survives outdoors under cover, and the listing cites a 2024 PCMag Editor's Choice for value. 2K+ at this price with a card slot is the configuration this whole site is organised around.
The magnetic mount cuts both ways. A camera that attaches without tools detaches without tools, so do not use the magnet alone anywhere within reach from the ground. Screw it down outside and save the magnet for indoor flexibility.

IP65 and pan-tilt on both units means neither is locked into an indoor role, and the AI detection for people, motion and baby crying is stated as having no fees attached.
The 2.4 GHz requirement is in the listing and is worth checking against your router before ordering. Combined-band networks that hide the 2.4 GHz side are the most common reason cameras like this fail during setup rather than after it.

A fixed camera sees a slice of a scene. This one turns through a full circle, which means a single unit on a corner can watch the drive, the side path and the back gate instead of one of them.
4K with 18x zoom is what makes the turning useful: you can go back into a recording and magnify a plate or a face without the image falling apart. The listing describes the AI detection, including unfamiliar-face alerts, as free rather than plan-gated.
Motors and seals are the trade. A pan-tilt head has moving parts exposed to weather, and it is the part most likely to fail first. If one fixed view genuinely covers what you need, a fixed camera will outlast this.

- A small room. 2K already resolves everything useful at that distance and costs half as much.
4K indoors sounds like overkill and stops sounding like it the moment you try to read something across a large room. The extra pixels are what survive digital zoom.
Full 360 degree pan with 116 degrees of vertical travel covers an open-plan floor from one mounting point, and 18x zoom means the recorded frame holds up when you magnify it rather than dissolving into blocks.
Everything said about indoor cameras elsewhere on this site applies harder here, because a 4K camera that can turn and zoom is a capable surveillance device pointed at your own family. Local storage, a unique password and two-factor authentication are not optional on a camera like this.

Almost every battery camera is 2.4 GHz only, and in a dense neighbourhood that band is a traffic jam. Dual-band is the quiet feature here and the reason this camera appears on a list rather than being another 4K body.
The night vision switches itself: infrared monochrome by default, flipping to full colour when motion is detected. That is a sensible default, because colour costs light and light costs battery.
The magnetic mount is convenient and is also how the camera leaves. Use the screw fixing for anything reachable, and keep the magnet for positions where a ladder is already required.

It pans a full 360 degrees and AI tracks people as they move through the frame, and because it is hardwired it records continuously rather than waking on motion. The HomeBase S380 in the box handles storage locally.
The review count was still low when we checked, so the rating shows an early pattern rather than a track record. The eufy cloud reporting from 2023 is also worth reading before committing, and is covered on the eufy brand page.

Eight cable runs is a real installation. If you are not doing it yourself, get the quote before buying the kit, because on a property large enough to need eight cameras the labour can approach the hardware cost.

Recorders are usually installed and then resented, because a box with a fan in it is audible in a quiet house. This one is fanless with a heatsink and vents instead, which the listing makes a point of.
Eight channels with three 4K dome cameras supplied, each on a single PoE cable, with face, person and vehicle recognition handled on the recorder.
The caution is evidence. This listing had single-figure ratings when we checked, which is not enough to say anything about reliability. Lorex is an established name, but this specific product is new and the rating should be read that way.

This exists for a specific household: the one that already opens its garage from the Chamberlain app. Adding a camera that lives in the same place as the door control removes a genuine daily annoyance.
2K across 130 degrees with a built-in spotlight for full-colour night footage, running on battery so it mounts without wiring.
Without the myQ connection the case thins out considerably. Judged purely as a battery camera it is unremarkable at the price, and several cameras above it do more. Buy it for the integration or do not buy it.

A square 1:1 sensor sounds like a specification footnote and changes what a doorbell is for. Wide-format doorbells frame a torso; this one holds a whole person and the ground in front of the door in the same frame.
The listing claims up to ten months on a charge wire-free, with AI detection of people, vehicles, animals and packages stated as needing no subscription.
The evidence is thin. A small number of ratings is enough to show the product works and not enough to say anything about how it ages. If that matters more to you than the frame shape, the aosu doorbell has thousands of ratings behind it.

At around fifty dollars this is the cheapest entry to Arlo, and the hardware is sound: 2K, package detection, and a choice of wired or battery installation.
The listing is clear that Arlo Secure unlocks the 60-day history, the AI detection and the emergency response. Package detection is the feature people buy a doorbell for, and it sits on the paid side of that line.
If you are already paying for Arlo Secure for other cameras, adding this doorbell costs you nothing extra monthly and is an easy recommendation. If this would be your first Arlo device, read the no-subscription doorbells first.

The hardware specification is unremarkable for the money. What you are buying is the part that never appears on a spec sheet: it works with the Google devices already in the house, on the first try, without a hub.
Battery and wire-free, weather resistant, suitable indoors or out, with mounting hardware and a charge cable in the box.
Battery life drops noticeably in winter, which is why a Nest-specific solar panel appears in the accessories on this site. Nest Aware is the subscription, and as with Arlo, the features that make the camera feel smart are the ones on the paid side.

What will it cost you over five years?
Put in what you are about to spend and what the plan charges. The arithmetic is the argument.
- Monthly
- $0 /mo
- Fees over the term
- $0 fees
- All-in
- $300 total
Pick a plan type to see what it does to the total.
Per-camera plans are modelled at $4.99 a month each and whole-home plans at
$12.99 a month flat, which is the shape the major makers use. Your plan's real price is on the
maker's own pricing page and is the number to trust; this works out the arithmetic, not the tariff.
How long will your card actually hold?
Local storage only helps if the window is long enough to be useful.
- Written per day
- 0 GB/day
- Before it loops
- 0 days
Worked at roughly 0.45, 0.9 and 1.8 GB per hour for 1080p, 2K and 4K under
H.265, and motion recording assumed at about 40 minutes of triggers a day. Bitrate varies with
scene complexity, so treat the answer as a range. A busy street will beat these numbers; a back
fence will not come close to them.
What installing one actually involves
TP-Link's own setup video for the C320WS family.
Worth five minutes before you buy a wired outdoor camera. TP-Link's video walks through wired and wireless setup, mounting the camera on a wall and fitting the waterproof cable connector, which are the steps worth seeing before you drill. The video is TP-Link's, not ours.
CCTV, security camera, surveillance camera: same thing?
In a shop, mostly yes. British and Indian buyers tend to say CCTV, Americans tend to
say security camera, and both are usually after the same kind of product.
The distinction that still means something is architecture. A true CCTV system is closed: cameras
run on cable to a recorder you own, the footage never leaves the building, and the system works with
the internet unplugged. A Wi-Fi camera is an internet appliance that happens to have a lens, and it
depends on a service to be useful.
Neither is better in the abstract. A closed system gives you continuous recording and
independence, at the price of drilling holes. A Wi-Fi camera goes up in ten minutes and asks
nothing of your walls. What you should not do is buy a Wi-Fi camera expecting CCTV behaviour, which
is where most disappointment in this category comes from.
What buyers actually worry about
Will it keep working when my internet drops?
A camera with a card or a recorder keeps recording. What stops is your ability to see it from somewhere else. Only a wired system with its own recorder is truly independent.
A 2 TB recorder drive holds about twelve days of continuous 4K from four cameras.
How far can it actually see at night?
Further in mono than in colour, always. Infrared reaches further than a spotlight, and spotlights are what give you colour. Listings quote the IR figure and let you assume it applies to colour footage too.
The C320WS listing pairs dual spotlights with an 850 nm IR sensor, which is two modes with different ranges.
Will the battery survive winter?
Lithium cells lose capacity in the cold, so a camera that lasted four months in autumn can need charging monthly in January. Solar fixes it only if the panel gets real sun.
180 days is the Tapo C402's best case, not a winter figure.
Can my neighbour make me take it down?
Not usually if it covers your own property. Pointing it at their windows, or recording audio across a boundary, is where complaints become legal problems.
Audio is governed by wiretap law, which is stricter than video law in several states.
Is a cheap camera a security risk in my house?
The hardware is rarely the risk. The company's handling of accounts, cloud storage and past incidents is. Prefer local storage and a camera that still works if the vendor's servers go dark.
Both Wyze and eufy have had publicised incidents worth reading about before buying.
What happens when the maker drops support?
A cloud camera becomes a paperweight. A camera that records to a card keeps recording, and a recorder-based system carries on regardless.
This is the strongest practical argument for local storage, over and above the fee.
Law, privacy and the limits of a camera
Audio is the part that catches people out
Recording video on your own property is broadly permitted in the United States. Audio is governed by wiretap law, and in all-party-consent states recording a conversation you are not part of can be an offence even on your own doorstep. Many cameras ship with audio on. Turning it off is a deliberate act.
Beyond the law there is the neighbourly version of the same problem. A camera that
covers your drive will usually catch some of the pavement and some of next door. Angling down and
setting activity zones so the camera ignores what it cannot help seeing costs ten minutes and
prevents most disputes.
And the honest limit: a camera does not stop a burglary. It records one. Visible cameras appear
to displace some opportunistic crime, which is not the same as preventing it, and the evidence on
deterrence is much weaker than marketing implies. Buy one to know what happened, to check on a
delivery, or to see the dog. Buy locks, lights and a door that does not flex for the rest.
If anyone in the household is being monitored rather than the property, that is a different
situation with different law around it, and it is worth getting proper advice rather than reading a
buying guide.

Questions people ask before buying
What is the best home security camera in 2026?
For most houses the Tapo C320WS, because it is wired, records to its own microSD card and needs no monthly plan. That combination is what keeps the five-year cost down.
If you cannot run power to the spot, the eufy SoloCam S340 runs on solar and stores on its own base station. If you want everything recorded rather than just the moments something moved, skip single cameras and read the CCTV system section.
Which home security cameras work with no subscription?
Twenty of the 24 cameras on this page record and keep footage with no plan. The Tapo C320WS and C402 take microSD cards; the aosu D1 kit and the aosu doorbell store on a base station; the REOLINK system writes to a hard drive inside the recorder. The two Arlo products need Arlo Secure for history, and the Nest and myQ cameras lean on their makers' plans; each is marked on its card.
Watch for features that are technically free but practically gated. Live view and local recording are usually free. Person detection, cloud history and rich notifications are the things makers put behind a plan.
What is the difference between CCTV and a home security camera?
In everyday use people mean the same thing, and someone shopping for a CCTV camera for home is usually looking at the cameras on this page. Strictly, CCTV describes a closed system where cameras feed a recorder you own, which is the REOLINK RLK8-800D4 here rather than a Wi-Fi camera that talks to an app.
The practical difference is continuous recording and no dependence on someone else's servers. The cost is cabling.
How much do security cameras cost per month?
Zero, if you buy for local storage. Where plans exist they cluster around $3 to $6 a month per camera, or roughly $10 to $15 a month for a whole house, and the whole-home tier is cheaper than three single-camera plans at nearly every maker.
Run your own numbers in the calculator above. Over five years a $13 a month plan is $780, which is more than any single camera on this page costs.
Do security cameras work without internet?
A camera that records to a microSD card or to a recorder keeps recording when the internet drops. What stops is remote viewing, app notifications and anything cloud-based.
A wired system with its own recorder is the only setup here that is genuinely independent of your connection. Battery Wi-Fi cameras usually keep writing locally but you will not know anything happened until the link returns.
Is it legal to record audio on a home security camera?
Video of your own property is broadly fine in the United States. Audio is the part that gets people into trouble, because wiretap law in some states requires every party to a conversation to consent, and a doorbell that records the pavement can pick up conversations you are not part of.
Turn audio off unless you have a reason for it, angle cameras away from a neighbour's windows, and check your own state's rule rather than a general article. This is not legal advice.
How long do battery security cameras actually last?
The Tapo C402 listing claims up to 180 days and that is the best case: few triggers, mild weather, short clips. A battery camera on a busy driveway can need charging monthly.
Cold is the other factor. Lithium cells lose capacity below freezing, so a camera that ran four months in September may need attention in January. Solar panels largely solve this if the panel gets real winter sun rather than north-facing shade.
What size microSD card should I buy for a security camera?
128 GB suits one 2K camera recording on motion for a couple of months of history. For continuous recording the card is the wrong tool and you want a recorder with a hard drive.
Buy a high-endurance card. Ordinary cards are designed for occasional writes, and a security camera rewrites the same cells constantly until the card fails, often silently.
Are cheap security cameras any good?
The Wyze Cam v4 at about $30 records 2.5K and is IP65 rated, which would have been a premium specification a few years ago. Cheap hardware is no longer the problem it was.
What you are actually buying at the low end is the company's track record on security and support. Read about how a maker has handled past incidents before you put its camera inside the house, and prefer local storage over cloud wherever you have the choice.
Where should I mount a security camera?
Eight to ten feet up, angled down, covering the approach rather than the door itself. A camera directly above a door sees the top of a head; a camera covering the path sees a face.
Keep the lens out of direct porch-light glare and away from spider-friendly corners, which are the two most common causes of useless night footage. Point cameras at your own property and not into a neighbour's windows.
Do I need 4K, or is 2K enough for a home camera?
2K is enough for almost every domestic job. The useful difference shows up when you digitally zoom into a recorded frame, which is where 4K keeps detail that 2K has already lost.
Lens aperture and sensor size matter more at night than pixel count. A 4K camera with a small sensor can produce worse usable night footage than a 2K camera with a large one.
What do I do with footage after something happens?
Export the clip to your phone or a computer before anything overwrites it, note the date and time, and keep the original file rather than a screen recording of it.
Loop recording means the clock is running. A 128 GB card on a busy 2K camera can overwrite within days, which the storage calculator above will show for your own setup.
