The best security cameras for cold weather

Every battery claim on every listing is a summer number.

What actually matters here

Lithium cells lose usable capacity below freezing. A camera that ran four months through autumn can need charging monthly in a hard winter, and that is normal physics rather than a defect. Nothing in an IP rating addresses it, because IP ratings describe dust and water, not temperature.

The reliable answer in a cold climate is mains power. A wired camera is indifferent to temperature in a way no battery camera can be, which is why this list leans wired while the solar page leans the other way.

If battery is unavoidable, solar helps and needs more thought in winter than in summer: the sun is low, the days are short, and a panel flat against a wall collects very little. Tilt it steeply and point it south in the northern hemisphere.

Two more cold-weather details. Condensation inside a housing causes more winter camera failures than water ingress does, and it comes from temperature swings rather than rain, so a position under an eave beats an exposed one even at the same IP rating. And infrared illuminators reflect off falling snow spectacularly, which means a camera that works perfectly in clear cold can be useless in a snowfall.
