Cameras for checking on an elderly parent

This is a consent question with a camera attached, not a security purchase.

What actually matters here

Start with the conversation rather than the hardware. A camera installed in an independent adult's home without their informed agreement is surveillance of that person, whatever the intention behind it, and it tends to damage the relationship it was meant to protect. If the person can agree, they should be the one deciding where the camera points and when it is off.

Where there is genuine cognitive decline the legal and ethical picture is different and more complicated, and it is worth taking proper advice rather than following a buying guide. Many jurisdictions have specific rules about recording in care situations.

On the practical side, a camera that pans is better than several fixed ones, because it means fewer devices in the home. Two-way audio turns the camera into an intercom, which is often the feature that actually gets used day to day. Local storage keeps the footage out of a cloud account that someone else administers.

What none of these do is detect a fall. Cameras on this page are not medical alert devices, do not monitor vital signs, and should not be relied on as a safety system for someone at risk.
