Is the aosu D1 Classic 4-Cam Kit worth it?

Four solar cameras and a base station that stores the footage locally, with the listing stating 32 GB of built-in storage and up to four months of retention. That retention figure assumes event recording, not continuous, which is the thing to understand before you compare it with a wired system.

aosu says three hours of daily sun keeps them charged. Each camera pans and tilts and will follow motion automatically, and the app can show four streams at once. For a house where running cable is out of the question, this is the least painful way to get real coverage.

Battery cameras miss things. They wake on motion, and the first fraction of a second is already gone by the time recording starts. If what you actually need is a record of everything that happened, you want the wired system further down this page instead.

Event recording is not continuous recording

The four-month retention figure in the listing is real and is also a consequence of how battery cameras work: they sleep, wake on motion, and record a clip. Four months of clips is not four months of footage. If something happened and the camera did not trigger, there is nothing to review.

That is the trade for not running cable, and for many houses it is the right trade. Just buy it understanding what you are buying. If you need to answer the question what happened between 2am and 3am, the answer from a battery kit is usually nothing triggered, which is not the same as nothing happened.

What it costs to keep running

Plan fees for the aosu D1 Classic 4-Cam Kit over five years: $0, because it keeps its own footage; the storage is in the base station that comes in the box.

The aosu D1 Classic 4-Cam Kit base station holds 32 GB. At 2K, with about 40 minutes of clips a day per camera, that is about 13 days of history. The listing's own retention figure assumes fewer triggers than that.

Different card or recording mode? The storage calculator uses the same assumptions.
