Is the Tapo C210P2 (2-pack) worth it?

Drawn for this site. Not a product photo.

Two cameras for about $25 is the kind of price that usually signals a compromise somewhere, and the review count argues otherwise: this listing has more ratings than anything else on this site by an order of magnitude.

The pan and tilt range is a full circle horizontally and 114 degrees vertically, which means one camera covers a room rather than a corner of it. The listing calls out baby-cry detection alongside person and motion, and states plainly that using it as a baby monitor costs nothing extra.

Indoors, pointing is the whole skill. A camera that can turn is a camera someone else could turn, so set a privacy position and use the app's schedule if the room is in use. Treat the remote pan as the feature it is rather than assuming it is always harmless.

Two cameras, two rooms, one account

The pack is the point. One camera in the room where the baby or the dog spends the day, one covering the hallway or the back door, both in the same app. The listing states 360 degrees of pan with 114 of tilt, 30 feet of infrared, and alerts for motion, people and a crying baby with no additional fee.

The listing also says the feed can be watched from two phones, which is the feature parents end up using most. What it is not is a dedicated baby monitor: it depends on your Wi-Fi and your phone, so if the network drops, so does the picture. Put the camera on a shelf rather than the cot rail, keep the cable out of reach, and set a schedule so it is off when the room is in use by adults.

What it costs to keep running

Plan fees for the Tapo C210P2 (2-pack) over five years: $0, because it keeps its own footage; the only thing to add is a high-endurance microSD card.

With a 128 GB card the Tapo C210P2 (2-pack) holds about 6 days of round-the-clock 2K footage, or about 7 months if it only records motion (about 40 minutes of clips a day).

Different card or recording mode? The storage calculator uses the same assumptions.
