Wyze: what the brand is good at
Wyze built its reputation on putting a real camera at a price that looked like a mistake, and the v4 continues that.
The hardware argument is strong. 2.5K, IP65, a starlight sensor and a siren for around $30 would have been a premium specification not long ago.
The company argument needs more care. Wyze has had publicised security incidents, including an episode where users briefly saw thumbnails from other households, and these have been documented in detail by the technology press. That is a reason to prefer local recording, to use a unique password with two-factor authentication, and to think carefully about indoor placement. It is not a reason to pretend the hardware is bad.
Practical notes. The v4 takes a microSD card and will record to it continuously when powered, which is the configuration to use if you want Wyze hardware without Wyze's cloud. Set that up on day one rather than discovering the gap later.
Support is thin by the standards of larger brands, and firmware updates have historically changed behaviour in ways that surprised people. None of this is unusual at this price. It is the reason to treat a Wyze camera as a cheap useful tool rather than as infrastructure you depend on.
