The best pan and tilt security cameras

One camera that turns, or two that do not. The answer depends on whether anyone is watching.

What this feature really means

A pan-tilt camera covers a room or a yard from one mounting point, which sounds like it replaces two fixed cameras. It does, when someone is actively looking. It does not, when nobody is, because the camera can only record where it happens to be pointing.

That makes pan and tilt excellent for checking in on a pet, a nursery or an elderly relative, and weaker than people expect for unattended security. Auto-tracking helps and is not the same as coverage: the camera still has to notice before it can follow.

The hardware trade is a motor and a moving seal, which is one more thing to fail and the part most likely to go first outdoors. And a camera that can be turned remotely is a camera that can be pointed somewhere you did not intend, which is worth a thought before putting one indoors.
